What Is a Microcement Bathroom?
Waterproof Microcement Coatings for Bathrooms
A microcement bathroom uses a specialist decorative cement coating instead of traditional tiles, paint or plaster finishes. The result is a seamless waterproof surface across walls, floors and shower areas with no grout lines or visible joints.
Applied in thin layers of approximately 2 to 3 mm, microcement can usually be installed directly over existing tiles, concrete, plaster or plasterboard without full surface removal, making it a practical low-disruption renovation option.
Once sealed correctly, the surface becomes waterproof, durable and easy to maintain while creating a clean polished concrete-style bathroom finish.
GreenCork Ltd are fully trained and certified microcement installers based in Leeds, delivering waterproof bathroom finishes across West Yorkshire with honest advice, clear pricing and fully insured workmanship. All systems are installed to manufacturer specification with guarantees where applicable.

Where Microcement Can Be Applied in a Bathroom
At GreenCork Ltd, we can apply microcement across multiple bathroom surfaces using one continuous seamless coating. Combining walls, floors, shower areas and bathroom features creates the clean uninterrupted finish microcement is known for.
Bathroom Walls
Applied over plaster, cement, plasterboard or existing tiles. Surfaces must be stable, dry and below 6% moisture content before installation. Fresh plaster should cure fully beforehand.
Bathroom Floors
Applied over concrete, screed, tiles, terrazzo, stone or timber subfloors. Floors must be rigid before installation. Fibreglass mesh reinforcement is embedded within the base coat system.
Shower Areas
Suitable for direct shower use with fully waterproof AQUA finish systems. Seamless surfaces remove grout lines and joints where moisture could penetrate behind coatings.
Bathroom Ceilings
Applied using the same preparation and layering process as wall surfaces. Creates a seamless decorative finish throughout bathrooms, wet rooms and en-suite interiors.
Bath Surrounds & Panels
Applied to bath surrounds and panels where surfaces are stable and waterproof before installation. Not suitable for permanently submerged or saturated bathroom surfaces.
Shower Niches & Alcoves
Ideal for recessed shelving and shower niches where tiled grout joints would otherwise require regular cleaning and ongoing maintenance over time.
Choose the Right Microcement Finish for Your Bathroom

Can Microcement Be Applied Over Existing Bathroom Tiles?
Microcement can often be applied directly over existing bathroom wall and floor tiles, helping reduce disruption and avoiding a full strip-out during renovation work.
For a successful installation, tiles must be stable, fully bonded and free from movement or hollow areas. Any damaged or loose tiles should be repaired or replaced before installation begins.
Grout lines are prepared and reinforced using fibreglass mesh within the base coat system to help prevent them transferring through the finished surface. Most microcement systems add approximately 2 to 3 mm in total thickness over existing tiles.
BEFORE APPLICATION
Tiles must be stable, fully bonded and free from cracks or hollow areas before installation. Fibreglass mesh reinforcement is embedded within the base coat system with allowance for the additional 2 to 3 mm thickness.
What This Means for Your bathroom
- Existing tiles can often remain in place
- No replastering normally required after removal work
- Less disruption, dust and renovation waste
- Faster installation and project turnaround
- Lower overall renovation costs than full retiling
Why Homeowners Choose Microcement for Their Bathroom
Here’s why more homeowners are choosing microcement bathroom finishes instead of traditional tiles, paint and grout-lined surfaces for modern waterproof interiors.
No Grout Lines or Visible Joints
Microcement creates a seamless bathroom finish with no grout lines where mould, moisture and staining commonly develop over time.
Applied Over Existing Tiles
Microcement can often be installed directly over existing bathroom tiles, reducing disruption, waste and unnecessary strip-out work during renovation projects.
100% Waterproof Surface Protection
Our waterproof microcement systems are suitable for bathrooms, showers, wet rooms and splash areas exposed to regular moisture and humidity.
Minimal Additional Surface Thickness
Applied at approximately 2 to 3 mm thick, microcement adds very little height to existing bathroom floors and surfaces.
Suitable for Underfloor Heating
Microcement works efficiently with underfloor heating systems due to its thin application thickness and strong thermal conductivity.
Low-Maintenance Bathroom Finish
Correctly sealed microcement surfaces require minimal upkeep and can be cleaned using neutral household cleaning products.

When Is Microcement Suitable for Bathroom Installation?
Microcement is suitable for bathrooms with stable, dry and properly prepared surfaces. Existing tiles, plaster, concrete and plasterboard can often be overcoated provided there are no hollow areas, structural movement or ongoing moisture issues. During our survey, we assess whether the bathroom is suitable before recommending installation.
Is microcement for bathroom floor slippery?
The water-based polyurethane varnish used on all three products is less slippery when wet than solvent-based alternatives. Anti-slip microsphere additives can be included in the varnish to achieve C1, C2 or C3 slip-resistance certification. We specify the appropriate level for all bathroom floor and shower floor installations.
How long before I can use my bathroom after microcement installation?
No foot traffic or water for the first three days. Water only for cleaning from day ten to day 30. Standard cleaning with a neutral detergent from one month onwards once the surface has reached full hardness. Keep the room between 17°C and 25°C during the first week.
What cleaning products can I use for microcement cleaning?
pH-neutral household detergents only. Never use bleach, acid-based descalers, limescale removers, abrasive cleaners, turpentine, solvents or hair dye. Only pH-neutral products should ever come into contact with microcement surfaces.
Can microcement be applied over damp or moisture-affected surfaces?
No. Microcement should not be installed over surfaces affected by capillary humidity or ongoing moisture problems. Any rising damp or moisture issues must be resolved before installation, as trapped moisture beneath the waterproof surface can lead to staining or coating failure over time.
How much does a microcement bathroom cost?
Microcement bathroom pricing depends on the size of the area, the finish selected, the condition of the existing surfaces and the level of preparation required. We provide free surveys and clear written quotations for projects across Leeds and West Yorkshire.
