What Is a Microcement Kitchen?

Microcement Kitchen Finishes Without the Grout Lines

A microcement kitchen uses a specialist decorative cement coating to create seamless floors, walls, worktops and splashbacks without grout lines, tile edges or visible joins. The result is a cleaner, more modern kitchen finish with a continuous concrete-style appearance.

Applied in thin layers of around 2 to 3 mm, microcement can usually be installed directly over existing kitchen tiles, plaster, concrete and worktop surfaces without full removal, making it a practical low-disruption renovation option.

Once sealed correctly, the surface becomes water-resistant, durable and easy to maintain for everyday kitchen use.

GreenCork Ltd are trained and certified microcement installers based in Leeds, delivering bespoke microcement kitchen finishes across West Yorkshire with fully insured workmanship and systems installed to manufacturer specification.

Where Microcement Can Be Used in a Kitchen

At GreenCork Ltd, we apply microcement across kitchen floors, walls, splashbacks, worktops and islands to create one continuous seamless finish. Combining multiple kitchen surfaces helps achieve the clean uninterrupted look microcement is known for.

Kitchen Floors

Applied over concrete, screed, existing tiles or solid timber subfloors to create a seamless floor finish through kitchens, dining areas and open-plan spaces. Compatible with underfloor heating systems due to the minimal 2 to 3 mm build-up.

Kitchen Walls

Applied over plaster, plasterboard or existing wall tiles to create a continuous surface from floor to ceiling. Particularly effective in open-plan kitchens where walls connect visually into adjoining living spaces.

Kitchen Splashbacks

Creates a seamless splashback finish behind hobs and sinks with no grout lines to trap grease or moisture. Usually applied directly over existing tiles without strip-out or major disruption.

Kitchen Worktops

Applied over laminate, MDF, stone and solid worktop surfaces to create a seamless finish across worktops and upstands. Chopping boards and heat mats must always be used to protect the sealed surface.

Kitchen Islands

Suitable for kitchen island tops and wraparound sides to create a continuous modern finish. Popular in handleless and contemporary shaker-style kitchens where the island becomes a focal point.

Kitchen Sink Surrounds

Suitable for sink surrounds and wet worktop areas where regular water contact occurs. The sealed surface is easy to wipe clean, although standing water should not be left for prolonged periods.

Ultra-Thin — Most Popular

Aqua Quartz Kitchen Finish

AQUA QUARTZ creates a smoother decorative finish with either subtle marbling or a more even appearance depending on the application technique used. One of the most versatile options for modern kitchens.

BEST FOR

Kitchen floors, walls, worktops, splashbacks and sink surrounds. Our most widely specified kitchen finish. The drain joint staining elimination makes it the preferred choice for worktop and sink applications.

Smooth Cement Finish

Nature Kitchen Finish

Nature creates a smooth, continuous kitchen finish with a soft cement appearance and very little tonal variation. The result is clean, modern and consistent across larger kitchen surfaces.

BEST FOR

Kitchen floors and walls where a clean, flat, consistent cement look with no decorative variation is the design brief. Handleless kitchens and minimalist interiors.

Raw Concrete Finish

Aqua Microconcrete Kitchen Finish

Microconcrete produces a more textured concrete-style surface with a natural raw appearance and greater visual depth than smoother microcement finishes.

BEST FOR

Kitchen floors and walls where an industrial, raw concrete aesthetic is the design intention. More textured surface holds slightly more residue than AQUA QUARTZ — factor this into cleaning expectations for floors.

Comparison

Tiled Kitchen vs. Microcement Kitchen

Traditional tiled kitchens rely on grout joints that collect grease, moisture and everyday staining over time. Replacing tiles later often means messy strip-out work, replastering and extra preparation around kitchen units.

Microcement creates one continuous sealed surface with no grout lines or visible joins. In many cases, it can be applied directly over existing kitchen wall and floor tiles, helping reduce disruption during renovation work.

Why Homeowners Are Choosing Microcement Kitchens

Here’s why more homeowners are choosing microcement kitchens over traditional tiled and grout-lined finishes for modern everyday living.

01

No Grout Lines to Clean

Microcement creates a seamless kitchen surface with no grout lines to trap grease, moisture or cooking residue, making everyday cleaning far simpler.

02

Applied Over Existing Tiles

Microcement can often be installed directly over existing kitchen tiles, reducing disruption, waste and unnecessary strip-out work during renovation projects.

03

Suitable for Multiple Kitchen Surfaces

Microcement can be applied across kitchen floors, walls, splashbacks and worktops to create a more consistent and seamless overall finish.

04

Compatible with Underfloor Heating

At only 2 to 3 mm thick, microcement works efficiently with wet and electric underfloor heating systems without significant build-up.

05

Durable and Low Maintenance

Sealed microcement kitchen surfaces are designed for everyday use and do not require repainting, regrouting or ongoing heavy maintenance.

06

Creates a More Seamless Space

HOW IT WORKS

Kitchen Installation Process in 3 Easy Steps

If you are planning a microcement kitchen renovation, every installation is completed in carefully prepared stages to create a durable long-lasting finish.

Free Survey & Surface Assessment

We inspect the kitchen, assess existing surfaces, check tile adhesion and moisture levels, then prepare the area for installation. Any loose tiles, damaged areas or unstable surfaces are repaired beforehand.

Microcement Installation

Primer and reinforcement mesh are applied before the microcement system is built up in multiple layers. The chosen finish is then hand-applied to create a seamless surface across floors, walls, splashbacks or worktops.

Sealing & Protection

The surface is sealed and finished with a protective polyurethane varnish in matt, satin or gloss. This final stage creates the durable water-resistant finish designed for everyday kitchen use.

Yes, with some important limitations. Microcement worktops must always have a cutting board used on them — direct cutting or chopping marks the surface. Hot pots, pans and appliances must never be placed directly on the surface without a trivet or heat mat. With these precautions followed consistently, a microcement worktop holds up well to normal kitchen use and is straightforward to maintain.

Yes. Microcement is a practical and durable kitchen floor finish when installed correctly over a sound, dry substrate. It is water-resistant, seamless and easy to clean with a neutral detergent. It is compatible with underfloor heating systems and can in most cases be applied over existing floor tiles without removing them.

All three are 100% waterproof and ready to use. Nature gives a smooth, consistent cement finish with minimal colour variation. AQUA QUARTZ is the most versatile — it can be finished marbled or uniform depending on trowel pressure, and eliminates moisture staining at drain joints and surface junctions. Microconcrete produces a more textured, raw concrete surface. AQUA QUARTZ is the most commonly chosen option for kitchen floors and worktops.

The kitchen cannot be used for the first three days. From day ten, light cleaning with water only is acceptable. After one month, the surface has reached full hardness and standard cooking and cleaning routines can begin. The room must be kept between 17°C and 25°C during the first week, and environmental humidity must remain below 50% during installation.

pH-neutral household detergents only. Never use acid-based degreasers, descalers, bleach-based products, solvent-based cleaners, abrasive sponges or wire brushes. Kitchen degreasers that are commonly sold for oven and hob cleaning often contain acids or strong solvents and must not be used on microcement surfaces. Always check that a product is pH neutral before using it.

Microcement has the same hardness and abrasion resistance as traditional microcement. Normal kitchen foot traffic does not cause scratching. Heavy dragging of appliances across the floor, sharp furniture legs without felt protectors, and heavy-grit dirt walked in on hard-soled shoes can mark the surface over time. Fit felt protectors to all appliance and furniture feet, and place a mat at the kitchen entrance to capture dirt and grit.

Pricing depends on the surface area, the surfaces being coated (floor, walls, worktops or a combination), the finish option chosen and the level of substrate preparation required.
