What Are Microcement Walls?

Decorative Concrete-Style Walls with a Seamless Finish

Microcement walls use a specialist cement-based coating to create seamless decorative wall finishes with no grout lines, tile edges or visible joints. The result is a continuous concrete-style surface suited to bathrooms, kitchens, feature walls, commercial interiors and selected external facades.

Applied in thin layers of approximately 2 to 3 mm, microcement can usually be installed directly over existing plaster, plasterboard, cement surfaces, tiles and other stable substrates without full wall removal or major rebuilding work.

Once sealed correctly, the surface becomes durable, washable and easy to maintain while retaining the textured character and depth associated with decorative concrete finishes. Waterproof systems are also available for walls exposed to regular moisture and water contact.

GreenCork Ltd install bespoke microcement wall finishes across Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate, Wakefield, Huddersfield and throughout West Yorkshire with fully insured workmanship and systems installed to manufacturer specification.

Comparison

Painted Walls vs. Microcement Walls

Paint sits on the surface of a wall and gradually shows wear through scuffs, fading and moisture exposure, particularly in bathrooms, kitchens and busy living spaces. Over time, repainting becomes part of the maintenance cycle.

Microcement creates a sealed decorative wall surface rather than a painted finish. The result is a seamless concrete-style wall with natural depth, greater durability and no grout lines or visible joints.

What Microcement Can Go Over

Interior & External Wall Surfaces Suitable for Microcement

One of the practical advantages of microcement walls is that they can often be applied directly over existing surfaces without full wall removal or major rebuilding work. Below is a guide to suitable wall substrates and the preparation required before installation.

Plaster & Gypsum

One of the most common wall substrates. Surfaces must be fully cured, dry and free from loose or damaged areas before application begins.

Plasterboard

Suitable provided all boards are securely fixed with no movement or flex. Joints should be taped and correctly prepared before installation.

Existing Wall Tiles

Microcement can often be applied directly over existing wall tiles provided all tiles are fully bonded and stable. Reinforcement mesh is embedded into the base coat to bridge grout joints.

Cement Render

Suitable as a direct substrate once fully cured, dry and below 6% moisture content throughout the surface.

Brick & Concrete Block

Suitable for internal and selected external applications provided the substrate is structurally sound and properly prepared beforehand.

Painted Walls

Microcement can be applied over stable water-based painted surfaces where the existing coating is fully adhered with no peeling or flaking.

HOW IT WORKS

Transform Your Wall With Microcement in 3 Easy Steps

At GreenCork Ltd, we install seamless microcement walls across Leeds and West Yorkshire using carefully prepared systems designed for durability, consistent texture and long-term performance.

Survey & Wall Preparation

We inspect the existing walls, check moisture levels, assess substrate condition and prepare all surfaces before installation begins. Any loose plaster, unstable areas or damaged tiles are repaired beforehand.

Microcement Application

Primer and reinforcement mesh are applied where required before the microcement system is built up in multiple thin layers. The chosen finish is then hand-applied continuously across the wall surface to create a seamless result.

Sealing & Protection

The finished surface is sealed with a water-based bi-component polyurethane varnish in matt, satin or gloss finish depending on the space and intended use of the wall.

Yes, in most cases. All tiles must be fully bonded to the substrate with no hollow areas. Any hollow, cracked or damaged tiles must be re-fixed or replaced before work begins. A fiberglass reinforcement mesh is embedded into the first base coat to bridge grout joints. We check tile adhesion during the free survey. Tiles that have been coated with solvent-based paint or epoxy require additional preparation before microcement can be applied.

Microcement installed over a stable, correctly prepared substrate will not crack of its own accord. If cracking appears in a finished microcement wall, it is usually caused by movement or cracking within the substrate behind it, not by the microcement itself. This is covered under our no-crack guarantee. Areas with structural movement, including around new lintels, expansion joints or recently settled buildings, are assessed during the survey before installation proceeds.

The right varnish finish depends on the room and how the wall will be used. Gloss is typically recommended for shower walls and splashbacks, satin suits kitchens, bathrooms and commercial interiors, while matt is often preferred for feature walls and living spaces with a softer low-sheen appearance. We advise on the most suitable option during the survey.

Microcement should not be applied to walls with active damp or moisture issues. If moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface, staining can appear over time. We check moisture levels during every survey and advise on any damp issues before installation begins.

Yes. Apply masking tape over the drill point before drilling to prevent the drill bit from chipping the surface edge. After drilling, fill any gap between the plug and the microcement with a flexible, neutral-cure silicone sealant rather than standard filler — this prevents cracking at the drill hole junction. Contact us first if you are unsure about drilling into a particular area of the wall, especially near junctions or in wet areas.

Pricing depends on the wall area involved, the application (feature wall, full room, shower walls etc.), the finish chosen and the level of substrate preparation required. We provide free site surveys and written quotes for all microcement wall projects across Leeds and West Yorkshire. Contact us to arrange a no-obligation visit.
